If he were any other Transformer, there would be almost no problem complying with that request. Unfortunately, the technology which Soundwave adapted for his legendary alternative form has long since been rendered obsolete. So any series that DOES try to include Soundwave as a new character nowadays has to come up with something that's new and high-tech yet still retains details of his original form. Not exactly an easy feat for a design team, but Animated's department has chosen to give it a try!

Soundwave's newest alternative form is a van. I've heard lots of people compare it to the Scion XB, like Binaltech Skids. It seems like an appropriate road vehicle for a band and is a good choice for a sound-based character. The front bumper features decals that match G1 Soundwave's tape-deck button settup.

Animated Soundwave in Robot Mode is shaped like a big blue & gold brick- yet another throwback to G1. But despite his blocky appearance, Soundwave is very articulate- maybe a bit too articulate in the legs. The feet don't really lock into the thighs and just kind of "hover" above the rest of the leg. Everything else moves and fits together perfectly though. And as yet another homage, Soundwave's chest is a clear section with a Decepticon logo.
As you may have noticed from the pics, Soundwave once again comes with his most faithful minion, Laserbeak. The long-serving Decepticon buzzard swoops in from G1 Homage-Land to once again serve alongside Soundwave. This time, Laserbeak takes the form of a giant guitar- which Soundwave can use as a weapon. The guitar plugs into Soundwave's arm while being supported by the other arm (he's ambidextrous; you could have a left-handed guitarist robot if you wanted). Laserbeak's a good follower despite being a tiny bit unorthodox. I can't wait to see if Soundwave gets any more of his minions back.

You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City!!!!
I think Soundwave would most definitely qualify as "Superior." He's not exactly perfect but is a great update on the old favorite. A-.
