"The Dark Knight"- my review

Postby Azrael on Mon Aug 04, 2008 12:46 am

I finally caved and saw this new Batman movie everyone's been talking about. And here's what I think-

Was it a good movie? Absolutely. I was thoroughly entertained. The characters are deep, the storyline is complex and compelling while the effects are excellent.

Is it the best movie of the summer? NO. That award still goes to "Iron Man." Merely because "Iron Man" breaks new grounds while "Dark Knight" does what all sequels do; taking characters/formula established in a previous installment and redirecting them in a new environment.

Furthermore, Ledger's Joker- Good? Yes. Oscar-worthy? Absolutely not; the only reason people are saying that is because of survivor's guilt and I for one hope that wears off soon.
"Know that men call you LIAR! Know that men call you BETRAYER! Know that men call you DEFILER! Therefore it is the duty of the Angel Azrael to bring you PUNISHMENT... the punishment of DEATH by FIERY SWORD!!!

I have a few complaints with the movie. First and foremost, Batman's voice. That... well, I am missing words to describe it, it was basically horrible. Secondly, Heath Ledger may have done a great acting job, but that... that wasn't the joker. Read DC like me and my father do, and you'll realize that there was way too much control, and way too little maniacal laughter. Seriously, the Joker was acting like a sane person. Totally backwards.
The third mistake was the harshest. The filmmakers have something against DC, I believe. They basically killed two-face in more than one way. In the original DC comic, Two-Face was created in a saga named "The Long Halloween", where the crime families of Gotham are taken down. He takes Maroni to the courtroom to testify (this scene was the first appearance of Dent in the film), and Maroni douses his face in acid. He then becomes one of the more infamous batman villains. And this was killed. HUGE mistake.

Two Face existed long before that comic was ever published [since 1942]. "The Long Halloween" is just a modern retelling of Dent's origins and his transformation into Two Face. But I agree that they should have used more elements from TLH to better flesh out Dents character in the film.
